I sell, therefore I am
Malcolm Gladwell famously suggested 10,000 hours of dedicated experience is the benchmark for Mastery in his book Outliers. With over 100,000 hours of sales, marketing and management experience and counting, I might be the Grand Poobah of Sales or something and don't even know it.
Upon discovering a comic book ad in '67 I began selling greeting cards door-to-door. Following simple instructions from the Junior Sales Club of America pamphlet, I soon felt like a pirate heading home with a pocket full of loot.
Training by Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, and Zig Ziglar got me off to a solid start, but training for my first radio sales gig made me a marketing mercenary. They sent me to Walter Hailey (the first billionaire in Texas) for a week of relationship sales tutoring, had the legendary Chris Lytle share his radio advertising sales process, and then had Production Manager David Lee teach me to write, voice and produce radio ads.
My first annual contract was with dragstrip owner, Broadway Bob Metzler. He later dared me to start my own ad agency, then became my first client. David Lee and I have conspired repeatedly through the years, most recently on The Titletown Music Archive.
With no fancy book-learnin' about advertising, I earned as I learned through a series of advertising sales gigs. Experience is the best teacher. But enough about me.
